Mike Colle Introduces Bill to Improve Sickle Cell and Thalassemia Care in Ontario

Bill 105 introduced ahead of UN World Sickle Cell Day

On Thursday June 7th, Mike Colle, MPP for Eglinton-Lawrence, re-introduced Private Members' Bill 105, the Sickle Cell and Thalassemia Care Ontario Act that passed first reading. The purpose of the Act is to establish a provincial body called Sickle Cell and Thalassemia Care Ontario. MPP Colle is calling for a provincial strategy to develop comprehensive coordinated care, promote awareness, and advocate for individuals living with these disorders. The bill would also proclaim June 19th to be Sickle Cell and Thalassemia Awareness Day in Ontario, to coincide with the United Nations' World Sickle Cell Day.

Ontario is leading the way among provinces for establishing screening programs to identify newborns who have sickle cell or other blood disorders since 2006. Provincial co-ordination of comprehensive healthcare is the next step so that patients can get lifelong care, genetic counseling and social support.
