MPP Introduces Bill to Improve Sickle Cell and Thalassemia Care in Ontario

On Thursday March 10th, 2011, I introduced a private member's bill, Bill 165, Sickle Cell and Thalassemia Care Ontario Act, to establish a provincial body called Sickle Cell and Thalassemia Care Ontario.

I am calling for a provincial strategy to develop comprehensive coordinated care, promote awareness, and advocate for individuals living with these disorders in my community and in communities across Ontario.

I would like to thank all of the guests who came out for today's press conference, and who attended the legislature to hear and support the First Reading of Bill 165.

A special thank you to our panel of speakers:

· Dr. Isaac Odame, hematologist at SickKids Toronto.

· Riyad Elbard, President of the Thalassemia Foundation of Canada

· Sherman Moore, sickle cell survivor and participant Sickle Cell Torch of Life run from Parliament Hill to Queen's Park in February 2011.

· Ms. Lillie Johnson, Sickle Cell Association of Ontario founder and recipient of the Order of Ontario for her dedication to the cause.

Thank you also to the Honourable Margaret Best, Minister of Health Promotion and Sport, for welcoming our guests to the Ontario Legislature.
