Friends of the Eglinton LRT Celebrate Purchase of Tunnel Boring Machines
MPP Mike Colle and local residents, who have been waiting for rapid transit along Eglinton Avenue for 20 years, are overjoyed with the purchase of tunnel boring machines by the Province of Ontario, that will start work on the Eglinton Crosstown Light Rail Transit (LRT), and extremely hopeful that the line will be built.
Metrolinx continues to move forward with its bold 5 in 10 Plan, a vision to improve transit, with a $54 million contract with Lovat Inc. to purchase four tunnel boring machines (TBMs) for the Eglinton LRT project.
The Eglinton LRT will take more cars off the road, improve air quality, create approximately 46,000 jobs, reduce travel times, provide accessible transit for the Disabled and for our local Seniors, and revitalize Eglinton Avenue. The project is estimated to cost $4.6 billion and will be completed by 2020.
In 1995, the Eglinton Subway Line was cancelled when the Harris government came into power, after construction had already begun in 1993.
