Young drivers and newcomers to Ontario deserve a First Chance.
With the full support of the Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario (IBAO), I have introduced a private members’ bill that, if passed or adopted by the Provincial Government, would give new drivers with a clean driving record a “First Chance” lower premium in line with what experienced drivers pay. Premiums would be increased in the event of an at-fault accident. The proposed Bill would also require that drivers who have had minor accidents (under $2500 in damages, without bodily injury, and paid out of pocket) not receive higher insurance premiums.
Legislation similar to the Insurance Amendment Act (Minor Accidents and New Drivers), 2013 was passed in New Brunswick between 2003 and 2005.
"We are pleased that MPP Colle has introduced this important Bill, which seeks to address the hardships and high premiums faced by new drivers and young people. This is a significant step toward affordable auto insurance for all Ontarians." – Randy Carroll, Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario (IBAO) CEO
